Algester sits in the Brisbane City Council area in postcode 4115, about 9.1 km north-west of the Marsden depot, with Acacia Ridge, Sunnybank Hills, Calamvale, Parkinson, Pallara, Willawong and Larapinta around it. It started life in 1968 as a Leighton Properties estate planned as "Ridgewood Heights" and took the name Algester in 1972.
Building really picked up from the mid-1970s under an all-brick covenant, so the typical home is a four-bedroom low-set brick house with a rumpus room and a double garage. A few went up in colonial, Cape Cod, Mexican or Spanish styles.
At the 2021 Census, Algester had 3,351 private dwellings and a median age of 36. Of the occupied homes, 80.8% were separate houses, 16.3% were semi-detached, terrace houses or townhouses and 1.4% were flats or apartments. Some 30.7% were rented, 26.9% were owned outright and 41.2% were owned with a mortgage, so plenty of work here comes through property managers as well as from owner-occupiers.
No part of the suburb is covered by Brisbane City Plan's Traditional building character or Pre-1911 building overlays, no local heritage areas are mapped and no Queensland Heritage Register place lies inside it, so there are no character controls to work around when a bathroom or laundry is redone. Water and sewerage come from Urban Utilities. Sheep Station Gully is the only named watercourse mapped in or along the edge of the suburb.
Most people know Algester by Ridgewood Road, where the local shopping centre, Algester State School (opened 1977) and St Stephen's Catholic primary school (opened 2004) all sit, and by Col Bennett Park. The interstate railway runs down the western boundary, though there is no commuter station in the suburb.
