Flushing a water heater is an essential maintenance task that helps remove sediment buildup, which can affect the heater’s efficiency and lifespan and it keeps your Hot Water System in good condition. See, the thing is we know that homeowners’ “to do lists” are long but it is essential to know how to perform a hot water heater flush to maintain your heater’s optimal condition.
There are several ways due to which you may feel that your hot water heater is not working properly, for example, it may be making an odd noise when turned on or the flow of water may be very slow.
Over time, minerals and sediment like calcium and magnesium from the water settle at the base of the tank, and these sediments harden and reduce the efficiency of your water heater. Sometimes too much sediment buildup may result in overheating, which leads to severe damage or even failure. That’s why it is suggested to regularly flush your heater to prevent such problems and extend the lifespan of your hot water heater.
– Garden hose
– Bucket (optional)
– Gloves (optional)
– Wrench (if necessary)
1. The very first step is to switch off the power at the circuit breaker in case of an electric heater and for the gas heater, you should turn the gas valve to the “Pilot” setting.
2. Secondly you should turn off the cold water supply to stop more water from entering the tank.
3. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. Place the other end of the hose wherever you want the water to drain like a driveway or large bucket.
4. Next, open the valves on either side of the system. You can find this valve located near the top of the tank. Opening it helps the water flow out more smoothly and it prevents a vacuum from forming inside the tank. now let the water drain completely. Be careful, as the water will be hot.
5. When the tank is almost empty, turn the cold water supply back on for a few seconds. Doing this will stir up any remaining sediment at the tank base and allow the water to drain out through the hose.
6. Once the tank is clean, close the drain valve and remove the garden hose then turn the cold water supply back on. Close the pressure relief valve once water starts coming out.
7. Last but the most important step is to wait for the tank to refill and heat the water. Check the pressure relief valve and the drain valve in case of any leaks.
